Asking prices, not valuations: prices on this page are quoted as published by third-party brokers and marketplaces, with source and check month. Every boat is subject to third-party survey, haul-out and document check. Nothing here is legal advice.

A traditional wooden boat for sale from Indonesia often traces to the South Sulawesi boatbuilding centres of Tana Beru, Bira or Batu Licin, the pinisi craft UNESCO inscribed in 2017. October 2026 listings ranged from a 14.75 m boat built in 2015 to a 47 m ten-cabin vessel. Survey, not tradition, proves seaworthiness.

Tradition is a selling point that a buyer should enjoy and then set aside when judging the hull. A boat can be built with enormous skill and still be poorly maintained. This page separates the heritage from the condition.

What does "traditional" mean for an Indonesian wooden boat?

Three separate things get called traditional, and a listing may mean only one of them.

What does "traditional" mean for an Indonesian wooden boat?
MeaningWhat it refers toHow to test it
The building methodSkills that UNESCO says pass through families and, by division of labour, to others.Ask where and by whom the hull was built
The rigUNESCO uses pinisi for the rig and sail of the Sulawesi schoonerAsk whether the rig works and when it was last used
The hull formThe shape of the hull, which a listing may call traditional whatever the buildHave a surveyor describe the boat as found

Many modern tourism boats combine a traditional hull with engines, air conditioning and modern electrics. That is not a flaw. It does mean you need a surveyor who can judge both the timber and the machinery.

A note on language: the UNESCO listing is for intangible cultural heritage, on the Representative List. It recognises a craft, not a specific boat, and it does not certify any vessel you might buy.

Which traditional boats are on the market in 2026, and at what sizes?

The table on this page quotes a sample with source and month, and the list below adds a larger boat for scale. The spread is wide:

  • Around 15 m: a 14.75 m boat built in 2015, on a KapalAku forum post in Labuan Bajo, marked negotiable.
  • Around 20 m: a 19.8 m custom built in 2016, on YachtWorld, lying in Coron in the Philippines, with 80 hp and 760 engine hours in the snippet.
  • Older hulls: a traditional build from 1998 in Labuan Bajo, on YachtWorld.
  • Marketplace rows: a used wooden boat at Bursakapal, from a June 2026 snippet.
  • Large vessels: a 47 m boat with ten cabins at Yacht Sourcing, in Labuan Bajo.

A 50 meter traditional yacht is a different kind of purchase altogether. It needs a crew, a business plan and professional management. Lamima, a 65.2 m vessel built in 2014, is marketed by a charter broker as the world's largest wooden sailing yacht. We quote that as marketing, and we do not know of it being for sale.

How is seaworthiness established for a traditional boat?

Local reputation does not settle this. Three lines of evidence do.

Survey. A wooden hull survey should involve sounding, spiking suspect timber, sample fastenings, frames, floors and caulking, after a haul-out. Our survey guide lists what to require. Sound timber rings when tapped, and rot gives a dull note.

Construction rules. BKI publishes Rules for Wooden Ships, in a 1996 edition still cited by technical research in the 2020s. We cannot tell you from public sources which vessels must comply. Do not assume a boat is classed. Ask to see any class certificate, and ask the registry what applies to a boat of that tonnage and use.

Record. Media reported at least six wooden tourist vessels sunk around Labuan Bajo in 2025, and KSOP at one point temporarily closed sailing for tourist boats. We do not name those vessels here. The point for buyers is plain: check the bilge pumps, watertight arrangements and safety equipment on any boat you consider, and ask what the insurer requires.

What should you ask about ocean crossings and delivery voyages?

A boat's heritage does not show that today's hull, fitted with cabins and a superstructure, suits a long passage. We found no verified public record of delivery voyages to cite, so your questions matter:

  1. Has this boat made an open-water passage? When, where and in what season?
  2. What did the surveyor say about her fitness for your planned route?
  3. Does the insurer accept that passage? Get it in writing.
  4. Do the fuel range and safety equipment match the route?
  5. Do the crew hold the qualifications required for that area?
  6. Is transport as deck cargo a better option? See how a wooden yacht is shipped overseas.

We can give one published reference: Emerhub puts Labuan Bajo about 270 nautical miles east of Bali. We have no verified figure for the Bulukumba run, so ask the skipper.

Where do traditional boat sales in Indonesia happen?

Traditional boat sales in Indonesia happen across brokers, international marketplaces, local marketplaces, forums and word of mouth. We can only quote what is published, so private sales stay invisible to us and to most buyers.

  • International marketplaces. A traditional Indonesian sailing boat for sale may appear on YachtWorld, usually with limited detail.
  • Local marketplaces and forums. Bursakapal and KapalAku carry posts in Indonesian. Expect to translate, and to ask for much more information.
  • Brokers. Yacht Sourcing publishes used boats with lengths and cabin counts.
  • Elsewhere in the region. A traditional boat for sale in Southeast Asia may lie outside Indonesia, as the Coron example shows, which changes flag and import questions.

Local posts may not mention documents at all. Ask early, and have a translator or lawyer read Indonesian papers before you rely on them.

Which timber goes where: ulin, teak or bitti?

Builder sources describe a common recipe. They are Juara Holding Group brands, so treat this as a builder's account and confirm it boat by boat.

Which timber goes where: ulin, teak or bitti?
TimberReported useQuestion for the seller
Ulin (ironwood)Keel and main structureWhere is it, and what fastens it?
Jati (teak)Decks, trim and interiorsIs it solid or veneer? How are the deck seams?
Bitti (Vitex cofassus)Framing and parts of the hullWhich parts, and how have they aged?

Timber names in a listing are claims, not findings. One boat's "teak boat" may be teak only above deck. Ask your surveyor to confirm the materials they can see. A traditional teak boat for sale should show teak where it counts, and you should know where that is. Read our teak and ironwood comparison for how each behaves.

How does a traditional boat compare with a modern wooden yacht?

How does a traditional boat compare with a modern wooden yacht?
AspectTraditional Indonesian hullModern or classic wooden yacht

The benefits of a traditional wooden yacht are real: volume, presence, and a building tradition still active in South Sulawesi. So are the limits. Decide what the boat is for, then test each candidate against that use.

Asking prices we checked

Public asking prices from third-party brokers, marketplaces and forums, each with its source and the month we checked it. Asking prices are not valuations or sale prices, they exclude survey, delivery, registration and tax, and listings may already be gone.

What do buyers ask about traditional wooden boats?

Heritage comes up often, so we start with it, then move to the practical questions.

Does the UNESCO listing mean a boat is certified?

No. UNESCO's 2017 inscription recognises the art of boatbuilding in South Sulawesi as intangible cultural heritage. It covers a craft and its communities. It says nothing about the condition of any particular vessel.

How long should a traditional wooden yacht last?

We have no verified public range. It depends on timber, climate and maintenance, so ask a surveyor about the specific hull. Be wary of a stated number of years in a listing.

Are traditional boats built to drawings?

We have no verified public source on how often drawings exist. UNESCO describes knowledge passed through families and shared labour. Ask for any drawings, stability information and the Surat Ukur, then ask a surveyor what is missing for your intended use.

Can I use a traditional boat privately?

Yes, in principle, though the flag and ownership route must fit your situation. Registering under the Indonesian flag requires an eligible owner, so read our guide to ownership structures and consult a licensed Indonesian maritime lawyer.

Which sources support this page?

These are the sources behind the facts above. Where a source is a commercial consultant, a snippet or a third-party guide, the text says so.
