How to ship a wooden yacht overseas: choose between a delivery voyage on her own keel and heavy-lift cargo, then clear export, including deletion from the Indonesian register, a builder's or deletion certificate, tonnage certificate and insurance, as foreign registries list. Shipping cost and Indonesian export duty have no public source we could verify, so get written quotes.

Wood changes the planning. A steel or moulded hull cares relatively little about a month on a ship's deck. A planked hull can dry, shrink and open up, then need care on arrival. So start with her construction, and let that shape the decision.

Own keel or heavy-lift: how is the decision made?

Vesselflag and Peters and May both describe yacht transport as an alternative to a delivery passage, using lift-on or float-on loading. Here is how the two routes compare for a timber hull.

Own keel or heavy-lift: how is the decision made?
QuestionOwn keelHeavy-lift or yacht carrier
Hull conditionStays in the water, but faces real passage loadsOut of the water, so drying and cradle loads matter
Main risksWeather, breakdown, leaks, wear on engines and rigLifting, support failure, seams opening
Port needsClearance at each stopA loading port with suitable depth and equipment
CrewDelivery crew and visasFewer, but delivery to the loading port still needs some

Ask a surveyor one question first: is she fit for this passage? A boat that manages coastal cruising may not be ready for open water, and a passage plan needs to be built around that answer.

Which export documents should you prepare: deletion, tonnage, insurance, radio?

Vesselflag's registration checklist gives what foreign registries commonly ask for. That list applies at the receiving end, and you will also need Indonesian exit steps. We could not find one official checklist for exporting an Indonesian wooden yacht, so have a lawyer and a customs broker confirm it.

  • Proof of ownership. The deed and bill of sale, with a translation.
  • Deletion certificate. Evidence that she has left the previous register, or a builder's certificate for a new boat.
  • Tonnage certificate. The Surat Ukur may not satisfy the new registry on its own, so ask.
  • Insurance. Evidence for the transit, as well as the policy after arrival.
  • Radio. Licence and MMSI details under the new flag.
  • Customs. Export declaration, valuation and proof that any mortgage has been released.

Change of flag is within the ship-status function in Indonesia, so ask KSOP or DJPL about the steps and how long they take. Our page on wooden yacht flag and registration explains the Indonesian side.

How do FOB, CFR and CIF apply to a boat?

These are Incoterms, and they apply to a sale contract. They set out who pays and who bears risk, but they do not replace the transport contract, the insurance policy or the transfer of title. Wikipedia's summary is a starting point, and your contract should cite the Incoterms 2020 text directly.

How do FOB, CFR and CIF apply to a boat?
TermSeller doesRisk passesInsurance
FOBClears export, loads her at the named portWhen on boardBuyer arranges
CFRSame, and pays freight to the named portWhen on board at originBuyer arranges
CIFSame, and buys the required cargo coverWhen on board at originSeller arranges minimum cover

The trap is in CFR and CIF. The seller pays the freight, but risk has already moved to the buyer at the port of loading. Minimum CIF cover may not suit a valuable wooden yacht, so ask for specific wording on lifting, cradle failure and rig. Add who pays for cradle, discharge, storage and relaunch.

These terms are built for port-to-port shipment. If she sails away on her own keel, FOB or CIF wording is likely to be the wrong tool, and your lawyer should draft for that.

What will the receiving registry and destination require?

Each flag state and destination has its own rules, and we have not verified costs or requirements for most of them. Before she leaves, ask:

  1. Can this registry accept a wooden boat of her age and tonnage?
  2. Does it require a survey by a recognised surveyor, or a particular measurement?
  3. What import duty or VAT applies at the destination, and on what value?
  4. Are timber or quarantine rules relevant to a wooden hull? Ask customs at the destination.
  5. Will she need work before local safety rules allow her to operate?

If she might come back, keep good export records. Indonesia's Vessel Declaration for visiting yachts covers foreign-flag boats on temporary import, and what a foreign flag does and does not allow once she returns.

Which seasons and crossings matter for delivery in Southeast Asia?

Asia Yacht Services' delivery guide describes the southwest monsoon affecting the Andaman Sea and western Malaysia from about May to September, and the northeast monsoon making the South China Sea and waters near Vietnam difficult from about November to March.

Within Indonesia, Neptune Liveaboards gives Komodo's dry season as about April to October or November, and Emerhub reports Banda Sea crossings by operators at set periods, from September to November and March to May. These are reports for planning purposes. A passage is made on a weather window, not on a calendar entry.

  • Choose your route with a captain who knows the crossing.
  • Take weather routing advice, and plan for spare time.
  • Check seams and pumps before every leg, not only at the start.
  • For cargo, ask how season affects the loading port and swell.

How should a wooden hull be prepared for time out of the water?

Ask the surveyor to write instructions specific to the boat. Planks shrink as they dry, seams open, and a hull may leak on relaunching. Master Mariners suggests a traditional hull may need about 7 to 14 days afloat to swell shut after a period ashore. Plan for that at arrival.

  1. Record the hull's condition with photographs and a signed report before loading.
  2. Have supports placed under structural points, with loads spread and padding fitted to the hull shape.
  3. Ask about shade, ventilation and direct sun during the voyage.
  4. Remove or secure rig, loose gear, fuel and batteries as the carrier directs.
  5. Have pumps ready and a watch aboard during the first hours afloat.
  6. Have a wooden-boat surveyor inspect her again after relaunch.

What is unverified about costs, and how do you get a quote?

We have no sourced figure for shipping, delivery crew or Indonesian export duty. Send every carrier the same pack: dimensions, weight, drawings, photographs, route and dates. Ask for a price that lists loading, cradle, freight, discharge, storage and insurance separately.

Selling abroad through the desk works the same way. Our guide for sellers covers what to prepare. Vessel-sale contracts handled through the desk sit with PT Komodo Galangan Nusantara, and the terms are stated before any agreement.

What do owners ask about moving a boat abroad?

Short answers for the first planning stage. Costs and Indonesian export duty are gaps we could not close.

Can a wooden yacht be shipped overseas?

Yes, a wooden boat can travel as cargo, subject to the carrier's approval and proper support. The main concerns are uneven drying, cradle loads and movement in the hull. Have a surveyor write dry-storage and support instructions, and ask the carrier to accept them in writing.

Can a wooden yacht be transported by heavy lift ship?

Vesselflag and Peters and May describe yacht transport by lift-on and float-on methods. Whether your boat qualifies depends on weight, dimensions, structure and the port. Ask for an approved loading and lashing plan that addresses a timber hull specifically.

What export documents does an Indonesian yacht need?

We found no single official checklist. Foreign registries generally ask for proof of ownership, a builder's certificate or deletion certificate, a tonnage certificate, insurance and radio details. Ask a customs broker and maritime lawyer what is required to leave the Indonesian register and clear export.

How much does it cost to ship a wooden yacht overseas?

We have no sourced figure for shipping costs or Indonesian export duty. Quotes depend on dimensions, weight, route, method and season. Ask carriers for written prices that list loading, cradle, discharge and storage, and ask a customs broker about duties.

Is sailing a wooden yacht overseas safer than shipping her?

Neither is always safer. Delivery exposes the boat to weather and wear, and shipping exposes her to lifting, drying and cradle loads. The right choice depends on her seaworthiness and the route. A pre-departure survey is worthwhile either way.
