Asking prices, not valuations: prices on this page are quoted as published by third-party brokers and marketplaces, with source and check month. Every boat is subject to third-party survey, haul-out and document check. Nothing here is legal advice.

In the new build vs used wooden yacht choice, Emerhub (March 2026) describes a 20 to 25 m new phinisi-type yacht as a 12 to 24 month project, with hulls from Tana Beru, Ara or Bira and fit-out in Bali, Surabaya or Jakarta. Used hulls come sooner, with survey risk. Time, risk, resale and price decide.

Neither route is automatically wiser. A new build gives you what you specified, later, with construction risk. A used boat gives you something sooner, with hidden-condition risk. The useful question is which risk you are better placed to manage.

How long does a new build take?

Published timelines vary with size and with the source. Emerhub gives 12 to 24 months for a well-appointed 20 to 25 m boat, and it publishes a cost figure in its March 2026 guide. It is a commercial consultant, so treat that as one view.

Larger and more fully fitted boats generally take longer. Ask for a written schedule by stage, and read any estimate as a builder's view rather than neutral market data.

What takes the time:

  1. Timber supply and seasoning. Ask how long the timber was dried.
  2. Hull and superstructure, often in South Sulawesi.
  3. Tow or passage to the fit-out location.
  4. Engine, systems, interior, rigging, electrics, navigation and safety equipment.
  5. Inspections and sea trial.

What did used boats ask in October 2026, and what do those figures exclude?

The table on this page quotes three reference rows: Manta Mae at 30.5 m in Raja Ampat, Sotis at 39.75 m in Jakarta, and a 40 m unfinished project in Labuan Bajo. For the full set by length, see wooden yacht asking prices by length.

Comparing those figures directly with a new-build quote is tempting but unreliable. A used asking price excludes survey, delivery, registration, tax and any repairs. A build quote may exclude engines, interiors or rig unless the contract includes them. Ask each party for what is in and what is out, and make the two lists match before comparing.

How should you compare the money on each route?

Asking which is more affordable, a new wooden yacht or a used wooden yacht, is the wrong first step. New wooden yacht prices and used asking prices describe different bundles. Line them up on the same sheet before comparing.

How should you compare the money on each route?
Line itemNew buildUsed plus refit
Hull and structureIn the contract, if specifiedIn the asking price, condition by survey
Engines and systemsOften a separate stageExisting, with hours and age to assess
Interior and rigSpecify in full, or expect additionsExisting, plus any changes you want
SurveyStage inspectionsPre-purchase survey and haul-out
DelayCosts money while nothing earnsRefit overruns can do the same
Documents and flagFrom scratchTransfer, and any fixes needed

The comparison between wooden yacht refit cost and a new build only becomes meaningful once a survey has told you the true scope. Get two written quotes on the same scope if you can, and allow a margin for what opening up a hull may reveal. The same logic applies to a new wooden boat versus a used wooden boat at smaller sizes, where the sums are lower but the risks look alike.

When does refitting a used hull win, and when does a new commission win?

Refit makes sense when the structure is sound and the problems are mostly systems and layout. A new commission makes sense when the structure is the problem, or when your use demands something no available hull offers.

When does refitting a used hull win, and when does a new commission win?
Lean toward refit ifLean toward new build if
The survey shows sound keel, frames and fasteningsThe survey shows widespread structural decay
You can tolerate the existing hull shape and cabin countYou need a specific layout or guest capacity
You want the boat within a year or soYou can wait and carry staged payments
The documents are cleanDocuments cannot be fixed on the used boat
You can supervise a yard, or hire someone who canYou can supervise a build, or hire someone who can

An unfinished hull sits between the two. It may offer a head start, but you inherit someone else's timber choices and any undocumented work. Our guide to the unfinished wooden yacht sets out those checks, and the refit cost guide explains what moves a quote. We have no verified public figures for refit work in Indonesia.

How is a wooden hull built, briefly?

Builder sources describe a two-site process. The hull is built in Tana Beru, Ara or Bira in Bulukumba, then towed to Bali, Surabaya or Jakarta for machinery, systems and interior. They describe ulin for keel and main structure, teak for decks, trim and interior, and bitti for framing.

UNESCO, separately, names Tana Beru, Bira and Batu Licin as the boatbuilding centres of the pinisi craft, inscribed in 2017. That recognition is for the craft as a whole. It does not reach any individual builder. Check a builder's work yourself by visiting a boat in progress and speaking to a past client directly.

How to protect a new-build payment schedule:

  • Tie each payment to a stage that a third party can inspect.
  • Have your own surveyor visit at keel, framing, planking, launch and fit-out.
  • Write timber species, fastening material and dimensions into the specification.
  • Agree who owns the unfinished hull and materials at each stage, and what happens on default.
  • Define the warranty in writing, including its length and what voids it.
  • Keep a record of change orders, since this is where budgets drift.

What should you make of operating-income figures?

Many new builds and used boats are bought to carry paying guests. Published nightly rates vary so much by source and boat class that they are poor planning tools, and we have no verified data on occupancy or profit. So we offer no income promise on either route.

If income matters to your decision, ask for an operator's actual records on a used boat, and build your own cost model for a new one. Licences, the crew rule and tonnage limits under the Emerhub reading may decide what you can do at all. See the ownership structure guide first.

Asking prices we checked

Public asking prices from third-party brokers, marketplaces and forums, each with its source and the month we checked it. Asking prices are not valuations or sale prices, they exclude survey, delivery, registration and tax, and listings may already be gone.

What do buyers ask when weighing new against used?

These questions usually come up after a buyer has seen both a hull in progress and a boat in service.

Is a new wooden yacht better than a used one?

Not automatically. A new build lets you specify timber, layout and paperwork, but it adds construction, budget and delay risk. A used boat can be surveyed now but may hide decay. Decide by which risks you can manage.

How do I protect milestone payments on a new build?

Tie each payment to an inspectable stage, have your own surveyor check it, and write down who owns the unfinished hull and materials. Take legal advice on what happens if the builder stops. Avoid large payments before work is visible.

What warranty should I receive on a new wooden yacht?

We have no verified public standard for Indonesian builds. Ask for written terms covering structure, machinery and fit-out, with the length, exclusions and how repairs would be handled, and have your lawyer check them.

Should I refit a used yacht or build new?

Start with a survey. If keel, frames and fastenings are sound and the layout suits you, refit may make sense. If the structure is the problem, a new build may be better. We have no verified public refit figures, so get yard quotes.
