By Wooden Yacht For Sale Editorial Desk
Asking prices, not valuations: prices on this page are quoted as published by third-party brokers and marketplaces, with source and check month. Every boat is subject to third-party survey, haul-out and document check. Nothing here is legal advice.
Classic wooden yacht for sale listings at Sandeman and Wooden Ships in October 2026 included a William Fife III 82 ft schooner, a Fred Shepherd 80 ft ketch, an Ed Burnett 58 ft schooner and an Alfred Mylne 58 ft cutter. The table quotes each asking price with source and month. Designer, rebuild and survey set the price.
Classic buyers pay for history as well as timber, which makes the paper trail part of the boat. A strong record can add to what a yacht commands, and a missing one leaves you relying on someone else's story.
What makes a wooden yacht "classic"?
There are two meanings, and sellers sometimes blur them. One is general: an older yacht of recognised design and character. The other is a formal racing definition, which you may need if you plan to enter events.
| Category | CIM wording (2009 to 2013 regulations) | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Vintage | Wood or metal, launched before 31 December 1949, conforming to original plans | Launch record and original drawings |
| Vintage, late cases | Designed from 1946 to 1949, launched before 31 December 1952, if the national association's certificate so considers | The certificate itself |
| Classic | Wood or metal, launched before 31 December 1975 | Launch date and current event rules |
| Spirit of tradition or replica | Treated separately under event rules, as summarised by event coverage | Whether the current event accepts the boat |
Those dates come from an older CIM document, and later seasons have changed some categories. Classic Boat has reported on the CIM adding rules for early glassfibre yachts, so read the rules for the year you plan to race.
Under this wording, the 2007 Ed Burnett schooner and the 2020 pilot cutter in our table are not classic by date. They are modern boats built in a traditional way. The word still appears in everyday broker language, so ask which meaning is being used.
Which classic yachts had published asking prices in October 2026?
The table on this page lists seven with source and month. All of them are public figures from Sandeman Yacht Company in Poole and Wooden Ships in Dartmouth.
- William Fife III schooners at 82 ft (1924/2012) and 108 ft (1931/2007), lying in the Caribbean and Spain.
- Fred Shepherd 80 ft Bermudan ketch, 1928, in France.
- Alfred Mylne 58 ft Bermudan cutter, 1931/2003, in France.
- Ed Burnett 58 ft schooner, 2007, in Belgium.
- Falmouth pilot cutter 68 ft, 2020, in Cornwall, listed plus VAT.
- G.L. Watson gaff cutter, 1887, in St Malo, rebuilt from 2009 to 2017.
Similar lengths can carry very different asking prices, because a named designer's rebuilt boat and a modern traditional build are not competing for the same buyer. For gaff, ketch and schooner trade-offs, see our wooden sailing yacht guide.
How do teak, oak and ironwood differ in classic and Indonesian hulls?
Classic European yachts and Indonesian hulls were shaped by the timber each builder had to hand. That leaves you with different maintenance and survey priorities.
| Timber | Where you meet it | Buyer note |
|---|---|---|
| Oak | Frames and, on the pilot cutter in our table, planking too | Ask about fastenings, since rusting iron can split the timber around it |
| Teak | Decks, brightwork, and planking on some boats | Check deck seams, because leaks cause rot beneath |
| Ulin (ironwood) | Keels and main structure in Indonesian builds, per builder sources | Heavy and durable by reputation, yet no substitute for a survey |
| Bitti | Framing and hull parts in Indonesian builds, per builder sources | Ask where it was used |
Those Indonesian timber notes come from builder sites within Juara Holding Group, so they represent a builder's view. For a fuller comparison of the two best-known tropical choices, read teak against ironwood.
How should you read a date like "1924/2012" in a listing?
The first number is the launch, and the second is a major rebuild. It tells you nothing about how much survives. That has to come from the records.
The rebuilt Watson cutter is a useful case, with its listing reporting around 80 percent new planking. Boat International's buyer's guide notes that class associations may accept even heavily rebuilt boats as originals, provided the hull shape remained recognisable through the work. Build new to an old design and you normally have a replica.
There is no single percentage rule that we can point to. Ask instead for these items:
- A schedule of replaced planks, frames, keel sections, deck, stem, ballast and spars.
- The yard's invoices and reports for the rebuild.
- Original plans, launch records and ownership history.
- Race history and period photographs where they exist.
- A surveyor's view separating original structure, sympathetic replacement and modern reinforcement.
The same guide calls provenance key to engaging with a restoration. Undocumented work weakens an originality claim, and it also makes the condition harder to assess.
What can you find by length and type?
Searches for classic wooden boats for sale often start from a size. Here is how the October 2026 examples fall, with prices left to the table.
| Search intent | Nearest published example | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Under 20 m | Watson 14 m; Burnett and Mylne at about 17.8 m | Burnett dates from 2007, so it is traditional in style rather than classic by date |
| 20 m classic wooden yacht | Pilot cutter at 20.73 m | Built in 2020, so check whether it suits your definition |
| Around 25 m | Shepherd at 24.4 m; Fife at 25 m | Both have long histories, one with a rebuild date |
| 30 m classic wooden yacht | Fife schooner at 32.8 m | A professional crew is likely at this size, so budget accordingly |
| Gaff rigged wooden yacht for sale | Watson 1887 gaff cutter | Heavily rebuilt from 2009 to 2017 |
| Classic teak yachts for sale | No teak-hulled example in our set | Ask the desk, and confirm what "teak" covers on any boat you find |
| Classic gentleman's launch for sale | None in our set | We hold no verified example, so we quote none |
A classic wooden yacht price depends on far more than these rows can show. Use them as a way into the market, then compare records and survey findings between the boats you actually like.
What do the UK and US surveyor bodies offer a classic buyer?
The published bodies are IIMS in the UK, and SAMS and NAMSGlobal in the US. They are places to begin your search, not a guarantee of wooden-boat experience, so ask each candidate directly:
- How many wooden boats have you surveyed, and of what construction?
- Will you pull sample fastenings and keel bolts, and will the owner allow it?
- Do you inspect the rig, or do I need a rigger as well?
- May I see a redacted sample report on a similar boat?
The technical checklist is in our guide to the wooden yacht survey. Plan around timing, because IIMS suggests a week ashore for the boat and up to two days of surveying on a thirty-foot traditional yacht. Longer classics need more.
What changes when you buy a classic abroad and bring it to Southeast Asia?
Some buyers want a European classic in tropical waters. Before you commit, think through the following:
- Climate. Warm salt water brings teredo and gribble, which can damage unprotected timber in a single season if bottom paint fails. Dry heat ashore can open seams.
- Flag. A foreign-flag yacht may enter Indonesia on a Vessel Declaration for up to three years under PMK 261/2015 jo. 123/2017. It may not be chartered commercially there.
- Tax. VAT status from Europe travels with the boat's history. Keep proof.
- Transport. Deck cargo or delivery under sail both stress an old hull. See shipping a wooden yacht overseas.
- Repairs. Finding the right timber and a yard used to a given construction takes planning. We have no verified list of classic-capable yards in the region.
How do you sell a classic wooden yacht through the desk?
Send the design, builder, rebuild record, current lying location and your asking price, plus anything that shows provenance. The desk prepares a sourced summary and compares it against published classic listings. Terms come first, and brokerage contracts sit with PT Komodo Bahari Nusantara. Details are on our listing-request page for sellers.
Asking prices we checked

What do buyers ask about classic wooden yachts?
These are the questions classic buyers bring up most, and the answers depend on records as much as on timber.
Is a rebuilt yacht still the original?
Boat International reports that class associations may accept heavily rebuilt boats as originals if the hull shape stayed recognisable throughout. A boat built new to an old design is normally a replica. Check the rules of any event you plan to enter.
How much original planking should a classic have?
We know of no universal percentage. Buyers look for a documented schedule of what was replaced, with invoices and yard reports. Undocumented or shape-changing work weakens the originality claim.
What does gaff rigged mean on a classic?
The mainsail is four-sided, with its top edge held by a spar called a gaff. It gives the traditional look, but it takes more line work and often relies on running backstays.
Are classic wooden yachts a good buy?
Value depends on the specific boat and your reason for owning it. We have no verified public data on classic resale or depreciation, so treat any promise of returns with caution and read our investment page.
Can a classic be based in Indonesia?
Temporary import on a Vessel Declaration runs up to three years under the customs rules, for non-commercial use. Check the current procedure and confirm tropical maintenance plans with a surveyor before you commit.
