Asking prices, not valuations: prices on this page are quoted as published by third-party brokers and marketplaces, with source and check month. Every boat is subject to third-party survey, haul-out and document check. Nothing here is legal advice.
Anyone searching buy wooden boat Indonesia faces one early choice: a hull launched in the Bulukumba boatbuilding centres, or a boat already working in Labuan Bajo, Bali or Lombok. KSOP Labuan Bajo counted 340 phinisi among 707 registered vessels in September 2025. Listings set the price; Indonesian regulation sets ownership, flag and survey.
Indonesia is a rewarding place to look for a wooden boat, and a demanding one. Supply is real, but public information is patchy, some rules are hard to verify, and the paperwork assumes you already know it. This guide gives you the order to work in.
Where do Indonesian wooden boats come from?
South Sulawesi is the source of the tradition. UNESCO inscribed "Pinisi, art of boatbuilding in South Sulawesi" on its Representative List in 2017, and it names Tana Beru, Bira and Batu Licin as the shipbuilding centres. Knowledge passes through families and, through the division of labour, to people outside them.
Builder sources add that a common practice is to build the hull in Tana Beru, Ara or Bira, then tow it to Bali, Surabaya or Jakarta for engine, systems and interior. Those builder sources are Juara Holding Group brands, so read it as a builder's account.
That split affects you as a buyer. Two boats from one beach can differ widely if they were fitted out in different places by different people. Ask where the hull was built, where the fit-out happened and who did the systems. The Sulawesi guide looks at hull-stage purchases in more depth.
Where are wooden boats sold in Indonesia?
| Place | What we can document | What we cannot |
|---|---|---|
| Labuan Bajo | 707 registered vessels in Sept 2025, including 340 phinisi and 86 ordinary wooden boats. Several listings in our table. Labuan Bajo Marina offers berths, fuel and maintenance support per Superyacht Guide. | How many are for sale at any time |
| Bali | Fit-out location per builder sources. Emerhub describes the Benoa terminal as having berths for superyachts up to 90 m. | No Bali row in our current price table |
| Lombok | Named alongside Labuan Bajo and Bali as a working area | No verified current listing |
| Jakarta | A 39.75 m used boat at Yacht Sourcing | Whether Jakarta is a wider market for wood |
| Raja Ampat | A 30.5 m used boat at Yacht Sourcing | Local haul-out and repair options |
| Batam, Surabaya, Ambon, Sorong | Searches exist | No verified current listing in this research pass |
Timing is a real factor too. Published season guides put Komodo's dry season at about April to October or November, and Raja Ampat's best months at about October to April. A boat that spends the season on charter may be hard to view or haul, so ask for a date when it is free.
What do Indonesian marketplaces show for asking prices in 2026?
The table on this page carries the examples with source and month. They include a marketplace snippet for a used wooden boat in Labuan Bajo dated June 2026, a forum post for a 14.75 m boat built in 2015 marked negotiable, and broker listings at Yacht Sourcing.
Three cautions come with these sources:
- A forum post may be old. KapalAku's posting date is uncertain.
- A marketplace snippet may not tell you what the boat includes.
- Listings priced in different currencies are not directly comparable, and exchange rates shift.
How does ownership work for foreign buyers: company structure, not a yes or no?
Registration in the Indonesian ship register is open to Indonesian citizens and Indonesian legal entities, according to the transport ministry material we found. Whether a foreign buyer's plan fits depends on flag, use and structure.
Emerhub (March 2026) describes a commercial route: a PT PMA held at most 49 percent by foreign parties, beside a 51 percent Indonesian corporate partner, for vessels above GT 175 under PP 28/2025, with all-Indonesian crew. That comes from a commercial consultant. Check it with a licensed Indonesian maritime lawyer.
A private owner may instead look at a foreign flag, with temporary import. Our foreign ownership guide sets out both, and we do not give a blanket answer because no honest one exists.
What should a survey cover before you pay a deposit?
A builder's reputation is not a survey. In 2025, media reported at least six wooden tourist vessels sunk around Labuan Bajo, and KSOP temporarily closed sailing for tourist boats at one point. That is why survey and insurance matter here.
Common problems to look for in Indonesian wooden boats include:
- Rot around leaking deck fittings, behind ceiling boards and at the turn of the bilge.
- Marine borers where the bottom paint has failed.
- Fastenings that have wasted, especially iron in timber.
- Seams opened by long spells ashore.
- Engine beds and floors weakened by years of vibration and bilge water.
- Systems added piecemeal during refits, with no drawings.
Ask a surveyor to state in writing what they will check. Surveyor credentials in Indonesia are hard for us to verify, so ask for sample reports and for wooden-hull experience. Technical classification rules for wooden ships exist too: BKI publishes Rules for Wooden Ships (1996 edition), though we cannot say from public sources which vessels they apply to. Ask whether a specific boat has any class certificate and read it.
Which documents should an Indonesian seller show you?
Ask for copies early, then have originals checked before final payment. Ministry material names Surat Ukur, registration deed, transfer deed, mortgage and nationality document as the core items.
| Document | What it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Surat Ukur | Measurement and tonnage | Dimensions and tonnage match the boat |
| Grosse Akta | Registration deed and ownership evidence | Name matches the seller, history is continuous |
| Mortgage record (hipotek) | Shows any charge on the boat | Cleared before transfer |
| Nationality document | Surat Laut or Pas, depending on size | Correct type, still valid |
| Safety certificates | Match use and area | Current and matching actual use |
| Permits | Commercial boats only | Who holds them, and whether they transfer |
A boat cannot legally go to sea on a sale deed alone. Sailing documents, safety items and crew all have to satisfy the port clearance requirements as well. Our nine-step Indonesian buying guide shows where each document fits.
What is the safest way to pay for an Indonesian boat?
Pay through a neutral stakeholder named in a signed contract. The contract should state the deposit, the survey deadline, your right to withdraw and how funds are released. Do not pay a person or account the contract does not name, however friendly the conversation has been.
Banks and notaries in the deal should be your own choice, and you should confirm any account details by a separate channel. We cannot verify which escrow providers operate in Indonesia, so ask your lawyer.
How do Indonesian and foreign-language listings differ in practice?
Many Indonesian listings and documents are written in Indonesian, and some important details never reach an English listing. A wooden pleasure cruiser for sale in Indonesia may be described quite differently on a local marketplace and on an international one, so compare both when you can.
Plan for this in three ways. Have someone you trust read the original wording, not only a summary. Ask for measurements in the units used on the Surat Ukur, because feet and metres sometimes get mixed up in listings. And ask for documents in the original language, with any translation treated as a convenience, not as the legal text.
How does this site fit with the wider Indonesian market?
This site focuses on wooden hulls. If you are open to any material, a sister Juara Holding Group brand covers all boats for sale in Indonesia, and we disclose that link as such. Both routes end in the same checks described above.
Asking prices we checked
Public asking prices from third-party brokers, marketplaces and forums, each with its source and the month we checked it. Asking prices are not valuations or sale prices, they exclude survey, delivery, registration and tax, and listings may already be gone.

What do buyers ask about wooden boats in Indonesia?
Questions on lifespan and timing come up constantly, and we answer what the public sources support.
How long does a wooden boat last in Indonesia?
We have no verified public range. It depends on timber, climate, fastenings and maintenance, so ask the surveyor about the specific boat. Be wary of any seller who offers a confident number of years.
What is the best time to buy a boat in Indonesia?
We know of no public data on seasonal pricing. In practice, viewing and haul-out are easier outside a boat's working season, which runs about April to October or November around Komodo.
What are common problems with Indonesian wooden boats?
Surveyors look for rot at leaks and in the bilge, borers where paint has failed, wasted fastenings, open seams and undocumented systems. No general statistic exists. Only a survey of the specific boat answers this.
Can I view a boat before agreeing a contract?
Yes, ask for this. A short viewing helps you decide whether a full survey is worth paying for. Keep the formal survey and sea trial as written conditions in the contract, because a viewing does not replace them.
Do I need a local partner to buy?
That depends on flag and use. Registering under the Indonesian flag requires an eligible Indonesian owner, and commercial use adds permits. Take your specific plan to a licensed Indonesian maritime lawyer before you sign.
