By Wooden Yacht For Sale Editorial Desk

A wooden yacht for sale in Sulawesi is, according to builder sources, mostly a new or nearly complete hull in the Bulukumba yards rather than a second-hand boat. UNESCO's 2017 inscription names Tana Beru, Bira and Batu Licin as boatbuilding centres. Hulls usually leave for fit-out elsewhere, so a purchase here is often a build or project contract.

Coming to Sulawesi means going to the source, with both the appeal and the risks that brings. You may see the timber and meet the builders. You may also take on far more construction risk than you would by buying a finished boat, so be clear about which one you are buying.

Where are South Sulawesi's boatbuilding centres?

UNESCO's entry for Pinisi, art of boatbuilding in South Sulawesi, inscribed in 2017, names Tana Beru, Bira and Batu Licin as the centres of boatbuilding. It describes "pinisi" as the rig and sail of the Sulawesi schooner, and describes knowledge passed through generations, within families and through a division of labour.

Juara Holding Group builder sites also point to Ara, which they describe as a source of skilled shipwrights known as Panrita Lopi. Ara comes from those builder sites, not from the UNESCO entry we read.

The inscription is cultural recognition of a craft tradition, on the Intangible Cultural Heritage list. It does not certify any yard, and a buyer still needs a contract, a survey and milestones.

What is actually on the market in Sulawesi?

We could not find a public feed of Sulawesi listings, so the picture below comes from builder sources and from how projects are reported to run. There is no asking price from Sulawesi in our table for that reason.

Since many hulls leave for fit-out in Bali, Surabaya or Jakarta, per group builder sources, a boat you find later in those places may have started here. Our page on buying a wooden boat in Indonesia covers the national picture, and compares your options across the country.

Here is the one published range we can link. It comes from a commercial consultant, so it is not neutral market data and could prove optimistic.

Emerhub (March 2026) reports 12 to 24 months for a well-appointed 20 to 25 m boat.

After launching, builder sources list engines, systems, interior, rigging, electrics, navigation, safety equipment, inspection and sea trial. Our comparison of a new build and a used wooden yacht helps you decide whether that wait suits you.

What should you inspect at the yard: timber and drying?

Group builder sources describe ulin for keels and main structure, teak for decks and trim, and bitti for frames. Our guide to teak, ulin and bitti explains each one.

When you visit, or when your surveyor does:

  1. Ask to see the timber stock for your boat, and how and where it is stored.
  2. Ask how long it has been drying, and how that was recorded.
  3. Look at the keel and frame joints before planking covers them.
  4. Agree fastening material and size, and check them against what is being used.
  5. Ask for dated photographs at each stage, especially of work soon to be hidden.
  6. Ask about legal timber sourcing, and which papers exist for it.

Visit more than once, or have someone you trust do it. A single visit shows a moment, while a hull goes through many stages. Your surveyor's attendance at key stages can cost far less than a problem found after fit-out.

How should you plan the delivery voyage to Bali or Labuan Bajo?

We could not verify a distance or a passage time from Bulukumba to either place, so we leave those out. Ask a delivery captain for a passage plan, and treat the voyage as the boat's first real test.

  • Is she moving under her own engines, or being towed?
  • What sailing approval and documents does she need for this move?
  • Who insures her on the way, and on what conditions?
  • What is the weather window? Neptune and Emerhub describe seasonal patterns for Komodo and for repositioning, but not this route.
  • Who is aboard, and who pays if she is delayed?

New hulls can take on water until the planks settle, and seams may behave differently under load. Plan a further survey on arrival and before final acceptance. Cali Coast Marine Services' warning about borers also applies from the first day afloat, so check that antifouling has gone on properly.

What should you put in writing with a yard?

A handshake won't protect you here, however good the relationship feels. Take this list to your lawyer:

  • Full specification, timber species, fastenings and drawings.
  • Milestones tied to inspectable stages, with payments to match.
  • Who owns the hull and materials at each stage, and what happens if the yard stops.
  • Inspection rights for you and your surveyor.
  • How changes are approved and priced.
  • Insurance during building and launch.
  • Dates, delay terms and what remedy applies.
  • Documents to be delivered, including measurement and registration support.
  • Warranty terms, if any, with exclusions.
  • Governing law and how disputes are settled.

How can the desk and our construction guides help?

This site is a guide and desk, not itself a contracting party. Construction, repair, refit and vessel-sale contracts are issued by PT Komodo Galangan Nusantara. The desk can take your requirements, and our guides explain the questions to ask.

Brokerage contracts sit with PT Komodo Bahari Nusantara, and the terms are stated before any agreement. Ask a licensed Indonesian lawyer to review them on your behalf. Boatmere's warning signs, such as a contract with no acceptance conditions after survey, apply to new builds too.

What do buyers ask about buying in Sulawesi?

Answers drawn from UNESCO and from builder sources, which we flag. Sulawesi has little public listing data, so several answers stop at what we can say.

Can I buy a finished wooden yacht in Sulawesi?

Sometimes, but builder sources suggest most boats there are new or nearly complete hulls rather than second-hand yachts. We found no reliable listing feed for finished boats in Sulawesi. Ask the desk or a yard, and expect fit-out to happen elsewhere for many projects.

Is there a wooden yacht for sale in Makassar?

We have no verified listing or yard information specific to Makassar to report. It may come up as a contact or transit point, but do not assume stock is there. Send us your criteria, and we will tell you if we can source something.

How long does a wooden hull take to build in South Sulawesi?

Emerhub reports 12 to 24 months for a well-appointed 20 to 25 m boat. Treat this as an estimate and not a guarantee.

How far is it from Bulukumba to Bali or Labuan Bajo?

We could not verify a distance or passage time, so we do not print one. Ask the delivery captain for a passage plan with distance, stops, weather window and insurance. Emerhub's figure of about 270 nautical miles covers Bali to Labuan Bajo only.

Is pinisi boatbuilding a UNESCO World Heritage site?

No. UNESCO inscribed Pinisi, art of boatbuilding in South Sulawesi on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017. That recognises knowledge and skills, and it says nothing about the quality of any specific yard or boat.

Which sources support this page?

Checked by the desk in October and November 2026. A source being listed does not mean the source agrees with us or has reviewed this page, and limited-verification items deserve a second look before you rely on them.
