By Wooden Yacht For Sale Editorial Desk
Wooden yacht insurance in Indonesia starts with an insurance survey, quoted per foot in published 2026 guides, and a policy that explicitly accepts timber hulls and the operating area. For commercial operation, Emerhub reports hull and machinery plus P&I cover are needed before the Syahbandar issues port clearance. Wooden-hull premiums have no public source, so get written quotes.
Think about insurance before the offer, not after the sale. If no underwriter will write the boat on terms you can live with, you want to know while your deposit is still refundable.
Why do underwriters treat wooden hulls differently?
Timber is organic, and its condition varies widely from one boat to the next. A moulded production boat has many identical sisters. A planked hull is closer to a single case, so an underwriter's view depends on evidence about this boat.
Expect questions on the following:
- Builder, construction method, timber species and age.
- Refit history, with invoices and photographs.
- Latest survey, date and who performed it.
- Haul-out and antifouling records.
- Claims history and any previous incidents.
- Where the boat lies, who looks after her and who runs her.
- Whether she will carry paying guests.
A strong file answers these before they are asked. Cali Coast Marine Services ties rot to trapped moisture, and NOAA's leaflet on borers explains how shipworm can hollow out timber from a pinhole. You can see why an underwriter asks about hidden timber.
What does the insurance survey cover, and how is it quoted?
World Yacht Insurance's guide lists the insurance survey as a separate per-foot item, quoted before any haul-out, and tells owners to get underwriter requirements in writing. Global Yacht Guide publishes general survey figures per foot as well. We have no public source for what surveyors charge in Indonesia, and our page on what drives a wooden yacht survey cost explains how to compare quotes.
Before you book, ask the underwriter:
- Must the surveyor be on an approved list, or hold a particular membership?
- How recent must the survey be?
- Is a haul-out mandatory?
- Must the report state market value, replacement value or both?
- Are machinery, rig, electrics and fire systems all in scope?
- Must recommendations be closed out before cover starts?
Lorrendraaier's guide adds a useful warning: a surveyor saying a vessel is insurable is not the same as an insurer accepting the risk. For the structural side, our wooden hull survey checklist shows what to request.
How do hull and machinery, P&I and port clearance fit together?
These are two separate types of cover, and they answer different questions.
| Cover | What it deals with | Points to check |
|---|---|---|
| Hull and machinery | Physical loss or damage to the boat | Insured value, deductible, exclusions, navigation area |
| Protection and indemnity (P&I) | Liability to third parties, such as injury, pollution, damage, wreck removal | Limits, passengers, crew, commercial use |
For commercial boats, Emerhub reports that both are needed before the Syahbandar will issue port clearance (SPB). We have this from a consultant and not from a regulation we read in full, so confirm with the port authority. Our liveaboard guide covers the wider permit picture.
Private and commercial use differ too. A policy written for private use may not respond if you take paying guests, and the permit position changes as well.
How do operating area, season and the 2025 losses in Labuan Bajo affect cover?
A policy's navigation limits define where, and sometimes when, the boat is covered. A route that crosses open water, or a seasonal reposition, should be approved in writing before departure.
Seasons are relevant to that conversation. Neptune Liveaboards gives Komodo's dry season as roughly April to October or November, and Raja Ampat's best period as roughly October to April. Emerhub reports operators rotating between them, with crossings at set times of year. Tell your underwriter if you plan this.
Safety is also relevant. Media reported at least six tourist phinisi sinking around Labuan Bajo during 2025, and KSOP temporarily closed sailing for tourist boats at one stage. That is part of why survey and insurance matter. We do not know how it has affected premiums.
What must a policy say about timber?
Read the wording before you pay. A general yacht policy may not have been written with a planked timber hull in mind. Ask the broker or insurer to confirm in writing:
- That timber construction, and this specific hull type, is accepted.
- How wear and tear, gradual deterioration and lack of maintenance are treated.
- Whether rot, fungal decay and marine borers are excluded, including resulting damage.
- What conditions apply to antifouling, haul-out frequency or inspections.
- How storm or named-storm events are handled, and whether a storm plan is required.
- Whether the boat is covered in a yard, on a slip or during delivery.
- Whether survey recommendations are conditions of cover.
Those answers matter a lot on a wooden boat, because slow deterioration is the risk a timber owner lives with, and you need to know whether the policy touches it. Upkeep then becomes more than maintenance. It is part of keeping your cover meaningful.
What is known about premiums, and how do you get quotes?
We found no public source for premiums on wooden hulls in Indonesia. The honest position is that this is a gap, and any quoted percentage should come with a written basis.
- Prepare the file: survey, photographs, records, intended use and operating area.
- Agree an insured value and how it was set.
- Approach more than one insurer or broker with the same information.
- Compare deductibles, exclusions and navigation limits alongside the premium.
- Ask what repairs would improve the terms, and whether cover is conditional on them.
- Check who issues the policy and where claims would be handled.
How should you keep claims and survey records?
Good records help you at renewal, at claim time and at resale. Keep one organised folder, physical and digital, with the following:
- Each survey, with a note of recommendations closed out.
- Haul-out dates, photographs of the bottom and yard invoices.
- Engine logs and service records.
- Incident notes, made at the time, with photographs.
- Correspondence with the insurer, particularly any written approvals.
If something happens, tell the insurer promptly and follow the policy's notice terms before you start repairs. Class can help too, where a boat has it: US federal rules describe how recognised societies run surveys, and Tasneef's 2026 yacht rules show that rules can address wooden hulls. Class doesn't replace an insurer's own view, though.
What do owners ask about insuring a timber hull?
Plain answers, and no premium figures, because we found none we can trust for Indonesia.
Can you get insurance for a wooden boat?
Wood does not rule out cover, but expect closer questions. An underwriter will generally look at construction, age, condition, maintenance records and where the boat will operate, and often require a recent survey by someone experienced with wooden hulls. Availability varies, so ask early.
How much does wooden yacht insurance cost?
We could not find a public premium figure for wooden hulls in Indonesia, so we do not quote one. Ask for at least two written quotes, based on the same insured value, operating area, use and survey, and read the exclusions before you compare the numbers.
What does wooden boat insurance cover?
It depends on the policy. Hull and machinery covers physical loss or damage to the boat under stated conditions. Protection and indemnity deals with liability to others. Read how the wording treats wear and tear, rot, borers and lack of maintenance before you rely on it.
Is insurance required for a commercial boat in Indonesia?
Emerhub, a commercial consultant, reports that hull and machinery and protection and indemnity cover are needed before the Syahbandar issues port clearance for a commercial operator. Confirm the current requirement with the port authority for your boat and activity.
Does a surveyor's insurable statement guarantee cover?
No. A surveyor's opinion is one input, and only the insurer can bind cover. Send the surveyor's details and scope to the insurer first, get written acceptance, and ask for confirmation after the report has been submitted.
